Literary Analysis | Week 12
Woolf's "A room of One's Own"
"More than anything, perhaps, creatures of illusion as we are, it calls for confidence in oneself. Without self-confidence we are as babes in the cradle. And how can we generate this imponderable quality, which is yet so invaluable, most quickly? By thinking that other people are inferior to oneself. By feeling that one has some innate superiority- for there is no end to the pathetic devices of the human imagination- over other people." (359)
I've decided to discuss this paragraph from 'A Room of One's Own' by Virginia Wool because it really caught my attention. I think we can in all way relate to this paragraph in some way. Whether, you are the one who acts superior to others or if you are on the opposite side and feel others think they are superior to you. This superior-ness can come from anything, for example, a job, money, cars, a house, your children, etc. I'm sure the person driving next to me in their brand new car feels they are superior to me, and they probably are. "For there is no end to the pathetic devices of the human imagination." (359) This line stood out to me because it gives the the idea that the author is communicating that feeling superior to others is just your imagination. By this, I mean, only you know you think you are superior to others. You don't tell people that you think you are better than them, you think it in your head and never say it out loud.
Hi Megan. I enjoyed this analysis of yours since you made it very applicable to our own modern lives with your example of someone driving a new car. It really is an unfair assumption for someone comparing their possessions to someone else's to believe they're better than them. For all the person driving a new car knows, the person next to them could be equally wealthy or even more wealthy than they are, but saves their money or spends it on other things. I feel like these superiority complexes in people are results of their own insecurities. Maybe they're embarrassed when it comes to being inferior in some aspect of their life so they find someone that they can compare themselves to in order to continue feeling superior.
ReplyDeleteHi there, Megan! I like how your analysis is laid out, it was very easy to follow and very engaging. I loved how relatable everything you said was, I think it made it easier to understand when you proposed it that way. I agree that we can't compare experiences because everything is individual to one's self. Great job, I can't wait to read more from you!
