Week 3 Analysis - Tartuffe

Themes
In this story we see multiple themes. Some of them are Hypocrisy, Love, Family and Religion. I saw these through out the whole reading.
Hypocrisy is the main theme for me. We saw it a lot. Every one called Tartuffe a hypocrite because they thought he acted pure and godly but they said it was all fake. They also called him a hypocrite because he had a "following" but was lusting after another mans wife. This is the definition of a hypocrite, going against your own words.
We also see Love. At first Orgon had such a strong brotherly love for Tartuffe. He even went against his family to give Tartuffe the deed to their property. He also tried to force his daughter into marriage with Tartuffe. I believe Orgon has a big heart and it shows. He wants to see the good in Tartuffe when every one was rooting against him. We also know thatTartuffe has a fascination for Orgon's Wife, Elmire which could be considered to be under this theme.
Family is seen when most of the family, excluding Orgon, stuck together and didn't let Tartuffe get into their heads. A more negative side to the Family theme is when Orgon practically said he would chose Tartuffe over his own family.
Religion plays a huge part in this story. The reason they got into a fight with Madame Pernell and Orgon was because of Religion. Tartuffe was the person they were following. Madame Pernell and Orgon were trying to get the family to follow Tartuffe too by pushing their beliefs on to them. The whole family pretty much refused and said they would never follow Tartuffe.
My question is why do only Madame Pernell and Orgon not see how deceitful Tartuffe is? What did he say to them in the beginning to make them follow him?

When Tartuffe was arrested by The King I couldn't help but think it was karma. I say this because he caused this family so much commotion and trouble. He even was going to have them kicked out of their house because he knew he had the deed now. Maybe if Orgon would have listened to his family instead of acting impulsively the story would have had a different ending

  1. Hi Megan,

Nice work on your analysis in finding these themes through out the reading. I think you have a great understanding of what the themes are but I also think that you should elaborate on each of the themes more and also provide some quotes from the text (if able). I feel like you have a lot of short, redundant sentences but if you could just focus a little more on one theme, then that would easily be eliminated. Overall great work, just need some minor tweaks.

  2. Hi Megan! I loved that you chose those themes because I also have noticed that those are themes that come up often throughout the reading. When I read the part of Tartuffe being arrested in the story I laughed. This is because I too believed that it was karma that brought that fate upon him. I loved that you defined Hypocrisy and explained why Tartuffe was a Hypocrite, but maybe you could add direct examples from the text so we can see directly what you are referring to. However, I loved reading your work because I got to see your opinions on the reading and got to see your view of the themes. I also loved that you put your questions you had of the text in the work because it made me question a few things I didn't think of before, like what he said before to win them over. I didn't think of what may have happened before the story before reading your work. Keep up the good work! Great Job!

  3. Hey Megan,
Nice job distinctly pointing out the overriding themes of this literary work. It's clear you grasped each of them and understood how they all weave together throughout the play. Direct quotes would help further your explanations of each theme as I'm sure you know, but otherwise good work. I'm with you on Tartuffe ultimately being served justice through Karma in the end. Like you said, if only Orgon could spot the nefarious intentions from the beginning all of this nonsense could've been avoided. Anyways, I look forward to reading your future posts.

  4. Hello Megan. I completely agree with the 4 themes that you said were present throughout "Tartuffe." Tartuffe is a hypocritical character who abuses the idea of religion for his own personal gain knowing that characters such as Orgon will fall for his act partly because of their faith. Love and family are present too, but in a negative way in my opinion. The family members get on each other's nerves because of how their lives are being ruined by Tartuffe and they don't know how to deal with their problems besides getting mad at one another.
