Reading Notes Week 3 Part B
The song of Ch'un -hyang
Ch'un- Hyang was a girl that was committed to Master Yi who went to war and never returned. She grows never sad.
Right off the bat I picture this being an older piece because he was sent to war and never returned and they didn't communicate will he was wrong. I also started thinking if they time period will change the direction of the rest of the story.
When a new governor comes and takes over her town, he is fond of her and he wants to be married. She doesn't want to be married to the new governor because she was still loyal and faithful to Master Yi who hasn't returned.
From this I can tell that Ch'un-Hyang is loyal and loves Master Yi. She wasn't going to go against her feelings to make the governor happy. This also makes me wonder if this had to with something from their culture. Does the governor think he can just marry her because of his title or is this something to do with their culture and traditions?
The governor is very upset and furious that Ch'un-Hyang doesn't want to be married. He is so mad that he sends her away to be beaten and punished.
Even when Ch'un knew she was going to be beaten she still refused. This reassures me she is being loyal to Master Yi.
When she is taken to be beaten, officers and servants turned away and cried at the sight of her being beaten. They couldn't see the sight of her being hurt.
I think the author put this in the story because they wanted the readers to sympathize with Ch'un-Hyang. They wanted us to feel bad for her, and I did. I wanted to be able to help her even though I knew I can't.
After she was beaten her mom came and saw he Ch'un-Hyang sat in prison, waiting and hoping for her husband to come rescue her.
Ch'un never loses hope. Even when she is beaten and thrown around, she still hopes her husband will come for her daughter was beaten so badly she asked why they did this too her.
Themes
Love - Ch'un being so loyal and in love with Master Yi she refused to marry the Governor even though she was almost beaten to death
Violence - We see violence when the Governor gets so angry with Ch'un-Hyang she sends her off to be beat.
