Reading, Week 2, Oroonoko
Aphra Behn was a successful English writer. I say successful
because it was a pretty big deal for women to solely survive off their work.
She published Oroonko in 1688, it is one of her most popular books.
Summary
Starting off the narrator says that the white colonists in
Suriname live with the natives in complete harmony and in a "perfect
amity" and they don't command them at all. They instead trat them as
equals theat they do trade with and respect them. (201)
Oroonko is about a
prince of a country called Coramantien. He was in the military when he fell in
love. Her name was Imoinda, "he was infinitely surpriz'd at the Beauty of
this fair Queen of Night, who Face and Person as so exceeding all he had ever beheld,
that lovely Modesty she receiv'd him, that softness in her Look and
sighs," (206) Was how she was described in the book. He was going to pay
her respects when her father died. That's when they fell in love and got
married. Then the King decided he wanted Imoinda as his concubine. She stayed
faithful to her husband but the King sold her into slavery. Soon after,
Oroonoko was kidnapped by an English sea captain and was sold into slavery to a
man named Trefry and his name was changed to Caesar.
